Malvern holds a special place in my heart because I grew up here and spent my formative years here. My family moved here in the 70s, first living in the Neilson and Finch area, but we lived on Pennyhill for 30 years, and this place is where I made the most memories. I remember when we first drove by this street. My late father said, “We are gonna live on that street someday.” And we did. My maiden name is Penney, so we were the “Penney's” of Pennyhill Drive. We lived right in the center.
Some of my favorite memories tied to this area would have to be hanging out and skating on Sundays at the Rec while two of my best friends worked at the snack bar. I practically lived at the rinks in Scarborough, watching my much older brother play hockey for many years and hanging out with friends.
Sometimes we used to hang out in the back corridor near the library with friends, sometimes up to no good. Sometimes for a make-out session, or 15-year-old me sneaking away to smoke a cigarette from a pack that I stole from the cigarette machine at Mother's Pizza in Malvern Mall.
MT was my high school. We had a hugely successful basketball team. MT was well known for basketball. It was fun during those years! Thankfully, I still keep in touch with many of my high school friends.
The community here is full of multiculturalism and diversity, and it always has been. Why have a burger and fries when I can have a spicy beef patty or a delicious curry chicken roti and some doubles? Some of the best food choices are in Malvern.
Since I've moved away, I see we have a bright and fresh new location for No Frills and Shoppers Drug Mart, which I'm sure has added value to the area, as well as some new condos beside the doctor's office!
I miss the 90s version of Malvern Mall. Super Computer Hour, Sam's Coffee, Open Window Bakery in the food court. It's a different feel walking through Malvern Mall now.
My biggest hopes and aspirations for Scarborough are that more funding is allocated to our hospitals. We desperately need it, and that those who love Scarborough like I do continue to pour all their love into the best place to grow up in! I hope to see some more future bright and talented stars come out of Scarborough and to continue to keep Scarborough on the map!
